Summary
Beam Solar helps Auckland homeowners decide whether rooftop solar is worth it. To produce a useful report we need to know a little about your property and your power use. This page explains what we collect, why, and what we don't do with it.
We don't sell your personal information. We don't broadcast your details to a panel of installers, they're shared with an installer only when you choose to contact one.
What we collect
- Property details you enter: address, property type, ownership, household size, EV/battery plans.
- Power use: monthly bill amount and how much you're home during the day.
- Contact details: name and email, so we can create your account and send your report.
- Technical data: IP address and standard server logs, used for security and rate limiting. When you accept a binding quote we also record your IP address and browser at that moment, as evidence that the agreement was made. First-party cookies keep you signed in; analytics and advertising cookies are only set if you accept them (see “Analytics and advertising cookies” below).
Information we collect from other sources
Some of the information in your report isn't entered by you. We collect it about your property from third-party and public sources so we can assess your roof:
- Address and location data: from our mapping provider when you search for and select your address.
- Roof and solar-generation estimates: derived from satellite imagery of your property through a third-party solar-modelling provider.
We use this only to produce your suitability report. Where the law requires it, we'll let you know when we've collected personal information about you from a source other than you.
Analytics and advertising cookies
With your consent, we use Google Analytics and the Meta (Facebook) pixel to understand how people use the site and to measure how well our ads work. These set cookies and share some usage data (such as pages viewed and actions like starting an assessment) with Google and Meta, who act as their own data controllers for that data.
These cookies are off until you accept them. When you first visit we ask, and you can accept or decline. Declining leaves only the essential cookies that keep you signed in. You can change your choice at any time using the Cookie preferences link in the footer.
Whether or not you accept, our site sends Google anonymous, cookie-free measurement signals (for example, that a page was viewed or an assessment was started) using Google's Consent Mode. These signals are not linked to you, and Google uses them only to estimate overall visit and conversion counts. Nothing identifying is shared, and no advertising or analytics cookies are set, unless you accept.
How we use it
We use the information you provide to:
- Run our suitability checks and generate your written property report.
- Email you the report and any follow-ups you ask for.
- Share your details with an installer when you choose to contact one.
- Improve our estimate and pricing models, using installer quotes and aggregated, de-identified data.
- Keep the service secure and reliable (for example, rate limiting and abuse prevention).
We will never use your information to send unrelated marketing or pass it to a third party for theirs.
AI assistant (Beam AI)
Beam AI is an automated assistant that answers routine solar questions in your chat with an installer and explains the figures on your report page. Its replies are always labelled as coming from Beam AI, never from a person.
To generate a reply, we send our AI provider (Anthropic):
- Your recent messages in that chat, so the assistant can follow the conversation.
- Property and energy details behind your report: suburb and region, power bill, household size, daytime occupancy, appliances like an EV or heat pump, and your estimated system size, savings, and cost.
We don't include your name, email, phone number, or street address in what we send. Keep in mind that anything you type into the chat is part of the conversation, so avoid putting details in a message you wouldn't want processed this way.
Anthropic processes this data outside New Zealand (in the United States), does not use it to train its AI models, and keeps it only for a limited period for abuse prevention. Like our other providers, it processes data on our instructions and can't use it for its own purposes.
You're never locked in to the assistant. Use the Prefer a person? Ask the team link under the chat box at any time and a human from the installer's team takes over. AI answers are general help and estimates, not quotes and not financial advice; the binding price always comes from the installer.
How long we keep it
We keep your report and the details behind it only as long as we need them, to answer your follow-ups and run the service, and no longer than necessary. You can ask us to delete your information at any time, and we'll action deletion requests promptly.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can:
- Ask to see the information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct anything that's wrong.
- Ask us to delete your data, subject to legal obligations we have to keep records.
- Opt out of non-essential emails, such as reminders, at any time.
- Raise a concern with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest. Access inside Beam Solar is limited to staff who need it to run your report. We will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner promptly in the unlikely event of a serious breach.
Where your data is stored
Your data is hosted with our database provider in Sydney, Australia. Some of our service providers (for example email delivery and the mapping and solar-data providers behind your report) may process data in other countries, including the United States. Wherever it's processed, we require providers to protect your information under data-processing agreements and to use it only on our instructions.
